Now accepting submissions for a new album of contemporary piano music, to be recorded and released in 2021.
Works should be for solo piano and be no longer than 15 minutes. These works can have been performed previously, but not already be part of a commercially-released recording. The idea is to make a great recording of great music that hasn't yet been recorded pristinely.
To submit a piece: Email a link to a folder with score along with optional recording or midi file to [email protected] and pay the $12 submission fee via paypal at paypal.me/sampostpiano by June 1, 2020. The submission fee defrays the cost of time getting to know each entry, reading it through and giving it thorough and careful consideration. Multiple pieces are allowed as separate submissions.
More about the project:
The idea of the album is to showcase contemporary music for piano by multiple lesser-known composers, including me and a couple of others that I already know (see more below). To avoid any conflicts or appearance of conflicts of interest, I will not be accepting submissions for this call from anyone I know, so the decisions about what music to include will be in two separate and non-overlapping categories.
In addition, I plan to include one “anchor” composer who is more widely known, to more easily grab the attention of reviewers and listeners, either Nikolai Kapustin or Gabriela Montero (if I can obtain permission), or both.
I plan to record at Blue House Productions in Silver Spring, MD, which is where I recorded my last released album “Dizzy Days” (see more details below).
Tentative other works will include:
Bernard Vallandingham: Saltarelle
Marc Chan: Two Fugues
Me: “Ghostly” Waltz, Blues-counterpoint #2
What the winner(s) get(s):
-A high quality recording of your piece on the album
-Communication and sample recordings leading up to the final one to square away any issues of interpretation
-Worldwide distribution of the album, including all leading digital platforms, and any royalties that accrue from your track.
-Marketing and promotion of the album included, with specifics and details tbd (see more below)
Other potential perks / avenues for cross-promotion to be decided on jointly:
-Live performances of the piece at my and your discretion (once I learn the piece, will be happy to perform it!)
-Inclusion on podcast (still a nascent project, we’ll have to see how it shakes out over the next year or so)
-I’m willing to discuss / entertain any other ideas you have!
You may have seen calls from Parma Recordings for their recordings, and noticed this one is similarly structured. Though I don’t have the marketing and promotion tools at my disposal of a larger company like Parma, this project will only cost you $12, as opposed to theirs, for which they will charge you upwards of many thousands of dollars.
More about me:
This album will be my fifth solo album (the fourth is currently in production to be released this summer). You can find / sample all my previous ones on any streaming platform (Spotify link, Apple Music link), as well as Amazon, CD Baby, etc. My last album was featured in No Depression, the cover story on the Syncopated Times. My recently released single of Kapustin’s Pastoral Etude was chosen for Spotify’s best new classical releases playlist. As of this posting, I have > 5,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and >2800 followers/fans on Facebook.
I’ve performed with Yo-Yo Ma and Renee Fleming and been commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony. I’m excited to do my best work on this next project!
You can find out more about me and hear my work at the piano on my website, facebook, youtube, podcast, etc.
